Waianae High school was built in 1959. After 52 years of service to its students and faculty renovation began on the B Building at the end of last year. “It’s always a good idea to have the best learning environment possible. We’ve had studies done in the past where some of the portables were reaching an excess of 90 degrees,” said Oshita.
Not all of Waianae High Schools classrooms have air conditioning and with the growing student population it was decided by administration that something had to be done.
New windows and air conditioning units are being added to B-building to provide a more comfortable student environment. “ Actual construction started during the fourth term of last school year,” said former Head of Facilities, Ryan Oshita. “The project was slated to be completed in August but there were a couple of delays,” Oshita added.
In order to get the money for the reconstruction school leaders had to put in a request with the Department of Education. “The funding came from the tax payers through the State of Hawaii General Fund,” Oshita added.
The students and teachers that were in B building had to move to different classrooms during the renovation. Although the reconstruction caused them to have to deal with change, they’re hoping to be able to move back in October.
