Fx= 15 cos 30 + Fy= 15 sin 30. This is no secret code, it is math. Math in Mr. Weyland Bailey’s robotics themed classroom. Bailey is the advisor for the Wai`anae High School Robotics club and incorporates basic robotics into his everyday lessons. The Robotics Club gives students the opportunity to do real life engineering, science, technology and mathematics in order to create real life robots that can move, grab, roll and go all over the place. For Mr. Weyland Bailey the Robotics club is his way of expressing
“2D - 3D types of object, to the point where kids can start to use real life components,”.
Incorporating math with robotics helps the students to build a life moving robot that can be designed to dance and walk without using any controls,
“it inspires me to build and you get to use hands on tools,” said sophomore Dayzina Fontez.
Searider Robotics team #3685 incorporates math into robotics it makes it easier for the students to measure and build there real life robots a lot more easier. From using math into robotics “the really great thing about robotics is that the students can use real life mathematics and concepts,” said Bailey.
Students that are in the Robotics Club come from a lot of different backgrounds. Video gamers, computer whiz kids and those who love building things,
“they get to actually bring their ideas and interest to life,” said Bailey.
With mathematics being just the tool, engineering is the opportunity to use the mathematics to build something, “Were actually applying mathematics to our engineering skills where your taking the mathematics and building something with it,” said Bailey.
From the Robotics club (after school) being more competitive too the class being non competitive the students that are in the Robotics class have three types of credit that they would earn, to where the club is just hands on learning and building.
Last year this rookie team from the west side of Hawaii finished first place out of 10 teams from around the state. With that victory, Searider Robotics went from competing at UH Manoa to taking there big robot to Saint Louis Missouri to compete in a nation wide competition. The Seariders of Waianae brought home another trophy making them one of the top high school programs. For Bailey his only vision for this club to become the top ranked team in all competitions which we want to be our future goal.
