Aspiring members of the Waianae High School girl’s soccer teams are getting an early start on the 2011 season. Four times a week they run the sand and swim at Poka`i Bay, and work on position and ball skills at Maili Beach Park. These conditioning sessions are a few hours long and are usually over by 6:30pm.
This year is actually the first time that the team has been able to condition this early, as official team try outs do not start until the beginning of next month.
“This is the first year we get to practice early, I think it's a good thing because the new girls get to experience how soccer’s gonna be within the season and how our team is actually gonna have to be during the season,” returning senior Jaydean Pacheco said.
The team is hoping that being able to practice earlier will give them a competitive edge.
“I think that if we start practicing early we can freshen up on our ball skills and get a head start,” Pacheco added.
The earlier conditioning times also help the team keep pace with other schools in their league.
“Oh yeah last year, most teams started conditioning before us,” head coach Vince Ramos said.
Last season was the team’s first year in the more competitive O.I.A Red Division, and though they had a losing record ,the Seariders still believe they can compete.
“It was hard because we challenged teams that has soccer in their community. We practice hard, came out to the games ready to smash some teams,” Pacheco said.
The team has high hopes for this year’s season and they know it will take a team effort.
“I feel that, we should expect to, work more as a team, and, become one. Because in order to win a soccer game, it doesn't take one person, it takes a whole team, to push all the way to win,” senior Chanda Schutte said.
The conditioning the girls are putting in may be that extra effort the team needs to become a contender.
“The girls told me that they wanna be the best, so, we’re looking to be the best,” head coach Vince Ramos said.
The results of all their work will be put to the test when the season starts in November.
